ModeHEd (Modernizing Health Education in Universities) is a three-year Erasmus+ project that is being solved from 15 October 2015 to 14 October 2018 as part of the Key Action 2: Cooperation for innovation and the exchange of good practices. The project involves 15 partners altogether and has been coordinated by Prof. Dr. Prof. h.c. mult. Klaus Hänßgen from the Leipzig University of Applied Sciences (HTWK Leipzig) in Germany. MEFANET is represented in the ModeHEd project by Prof. Stanislav Štípek, MD, PhD, from the First Faculty of Medicine of the Charles University (Prague, Czech Republic), and Assoc. Prof. Jaroslav Majerník, PhD, from the Faculty of Medicine of the Pavol Jozef Safarik University in Kosice (Slovakia).
The main objective of the project is to improve the quality of public health services in Uzbekistan and in Kazakhstan by the modernisation of healthcare curricula used in Uzbek and Kazakh universities, while partners from the three above-mentioned EU countries are expected to provide the needed support. The modernisation itself has been carried out by the adaptation and restructuring of healthcare education and by the introduction of innovative teaching methods into the educational process. The curricula of seven healthcare areas have been modernised by partner institutions as a result of expert training sessions for Uzbek and Kazakh teachers that were held at universities in EU countries. In 2017, training sessions and control activities took place in Shymkent (Kazakhstan) and in Leipzig (Germany).
The coordination meeting in Shymkent was organised by the South Kazakhstan State Pharmaceutical Academy (SKSPhA), which is located in Shymkent. Project activities in Shykment have been led by Assoc. Prof. Alma Akhmetova, PhD, vice-rector for strategic partnerships and international cooperation of the SKSPhA. The meeting programme was divided into three working days, from 26 September to 28 September 2017. All project partners presented the current state of their activities, discussed further possibilities of using modern information technologies in teaching activities used at universities participating in the project and elaborated the schedule of activities and next steps that would finally lead to meeting the remaining project objectives. Administrative issues related to the overall project management were also discussed.
Training activities in Leipzig were held from 10 December 2017 to 15 December 2017 and were led by Prof. Dr. Prof. h.c. mult. Klaus Hänßgen, the project coordinator. Prof. Hänßgen and his team from HTWK organised the meeting programme for partner institutions as a combination of presentations, training sessions, visits to specialised laboratories, visit to the university library and discussions about individual study programmes and about shared projects. Apart from that, partners from Uzbek and Kazakh universities presented their progress in the modernisation of courses such as physiology, hygiene, valeology, foundations of medicine, sports medicine, public health, first aid or paramedical care. The subsequent reviews of preliminary outputs as well as discussions among the meeting participants led to recommendations intended to further improve educational outputs of the project; these recommendations will be implemented at all partner universities in Uzbekistan and in Kazakhstan and will be made available for the general public in 2018, when the project will be concluded.
